Plagiarism in our classrooms looks very different from when I was in high school, which was only 5 years ago. For languages, formative or summative assessment assignments I give students will need to be completed in class time. It’s crucial students are utilizing their language knowledge in the class rather than getting Google Translate or Chat GPT to write it for them. Otherwise, learning would be significantly hindered in this context.
However, in a social studies classroom I would be eager to utilize AI for students who are stumped on where to start for a project or assignment. In this way, I would use it as a tool for creating outlines or ideas. I would also teach students how to properly reference when using the AI in this way. Likewise, it would be an amazing tool for a rough over view of research, similar to Wikipedia. But like a language class, if I was assessing students understanding through writing tasks I think I would require these to be completed within class time.
Essentially, in both scenarios instead of assigning work outside the class you have to allow students the time to complete these tasks in class to prevent plagiarism at home.
