The focus this week was on AI’s place in learning. When it comes to the discussion of AI, I feel like my opinion is not fully formed because the technology is so new. I feel like how teachers must’ve felt during the evolvement of worldwide-search engines and the beginning of Wikipedia.

In the same vain, I was too scared to sign up for my own Chat GPT account because I did not want to give the machine my phone number. Yes, I know that sounds crazy. I used instead my roommate’s account to test out the French option of Chat GPT.

It was very interesting, with some noticeable syntax and grammar errors. I think in a Core French class I would maybe use Chat GPT as a starting off point for students who are unsure of what they want to write for an assignment or as a way to analyze in-proper syntax and grammar.

I googled examples of people using AI to learn a language and a video of a man using it to learn French by having Chat GPT write a small Christmas story. The video is quite interesting if you have time to watch, but basically he is reading and speaking in French, then asking Chat GPT to clarify or breakdown meaning and sentence structure in French for parts of the story he does not understand.

Video from Dustin Schermaul in YouTube.

This is an approach I had not considered but essentially Chat GPT provides an opportunity for reading comprehension and oral practice. I also wonder if it would be possible to ask the AI to write a story at a certain language level like A2 or B2?

What are your thoughts on AI in your subjects?
