This week we had a guest speaker who talked about multimedia learning and HP5. In particular, HP5 is a plug-in that has a variety of useful resources for teachers to use. I recorded a short video of some of the useful tools I found for language learning, such as interactive crosswords, dialog cards, and dictation. These would be great for second language learner’s especially in core french classroom, I don’t know if it would be particularly useful in a secondary immersion class because it more for basic content and vocabulary building.

There was also an interesting one that has students sort the paragraphs, I think this activity would be great because it wouldn’t be about understanding every word but having students grasp the context of the paragraphs to put the story in order.

I also would like to touch on the idea of having a flipped learning classroom. I had this for a Math 8 class while I was in high school. Myself and the other students loathed every second of this class and spent a majority of the year (because we were a linear school) coming to class having to re-learn what we had watched in order to complete the assignments or activities. I think in certain settings this is a great idea (such as seminar), but I am apprehensive about its usefulness at the high school level. However, having students engage in their second language learning outside the classroom is something that would be beneficial for students because they would not only be exposed to that language for one hour a day. It’s an interesting idea that I would try, but hesitantly.

Is a flipped classroom something you would consider trying in your subject areas?
